New Wave is about feminist activism and art that are building new worlds and possibilities. There is an emphasis on intergenerational activism that is being led by younger feminists, but we also feature older feminists with intersectional and visionary politics. There is a direct link between activism and art, as both are about birthing new language, perspectives, and narratives. In particular, this newsletter will seek to emphasize feminist movements and artists who resist neoliberal co-optation and individual hero narrative, and who champion collective issues, community, and movement-building.

About the author

Ani Phoebe (she/her) is a feminist writer and DJ. Whether I’m writing about grassroots feminist organizing or selling records and throwing a party, I am interested in the behind-the-scenes internal dynamics and tensions that reveal how tenuous yet essential it is to be in community.

For six years, I’ve consulted for feminist and human rights organizations, specializing in strategic communications, media strategy, and research on feminist organizing, young feminist-led activism, reproductive rights in the Brazilian context, and feminist advocacy in digital rights spaces. Now, I’ve broadened my career to outside of the nonprofit/foundation space and included cultural organizing in my arsenal, organizing pop-up record sales and all-vinyl parties with Bad Times Disco in Hong Kong. My work has been published in Teen Vogue, gal-dem, The Guardian, OpenDemocracy, and more.

Born in New York City and globally raised, I’m a third culture kid who’s lived in Brazil, India, and Hong Kong. Currently
